Teaching Philosophy

Biography

Patrick holds a Master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from California State University, Sacramento, and a Bachelor’s degree in Strategic and Corporate Communication from Chapman University along with minors in Art History and Psychology. With a deep passion for language education and serving others, Patrick teaches English classes throughout the Sacramento region.

Patrick spent two years in Japan as an English conversation tutor, where he also studied Japanese language and culture, fostering a global perspective that continues to inform his teaching practice. This experience proved to be extremely formative and ultimately began his path as an educator. Here in the U.S., he has served many students across local institutions such as CSU Sacramento, Sierra College, Folsom Lake College, as well as Sayonara Community Center. Among these institutions Patrick has acted as an after-school tutor at Sayonara Community Center, an international student peer-tutor, a writing tutor in CSU Sacramento's Writing Center, a Composition instructor in CSU Sacramento's English Department, and an English Instructor for CSU Sacramento's Educational Opportunity Program. Currently, Patrick is an ESL instructor and teaches ESL courses at Sierra College and Folsom Lake College, and remains a seasonal adjunct instructor for Santiago Canyon College's College of Continuing Education in Orange, County, California.

As for his teaching philosophy, it centers on three core values: patience, engagement, and humility. Recognizing that meaningful engagement takes time, Patrick strives to create an inclusive and dynamic learning environment where students feel supported yet challenged. He does this by exhibiting patience and calm with his students on a daily basis throughout the semester regarding things like feedback, assessments, and overall learning. A typical day in his class might include in-depth vocabulary and grammar presentations, meaningful reflective exercises, one-on-one teacher-student time, and collaborative group activities to promote students' engagement, active participation, and deep learning. Rounding out his philosophy, Patrick believes in maintaining humility as an educator by continually refining his teaching practices through asking for student feedback, reading current TESOL research, and being willing to learn new things each semester.

Ultimately, Patrick believes that engaged students are the ones who truly learn, so he aims to create an authentic and engaging classroom experience that empowers students to develop confidence and competence in their language skills for use even beyond the classroom.

In their his free time, Patrick enjoys brewing coffee, shopping for bags and shoes, and reading books on other countries' history.
